That’s When It Hit You

David Thompson

You shiver in bed as the night gets colder
Pull the covers ‘round your shoulders
Reach out to touch me, but the bed has grown stone cold.
You wrap a blanket close around you,
Tumble out of bed – tonight you’re not sure,
You just want to check those door locks one last time.
In the TV’s (moonlight’s) glow you see the flag,
The one handed to you at Fort Bragg,
Think you hear a voice, call out my name.

That’s when it hit you, I’m not there.
I can’t be coming home again.
I will never hold you close.
It hit you, like a hurricane:
Your howling soul, your crying rain
Now when you need me more than ever,
Here all alone, I’m gone forever,
We’re two casualties of that terrible war.
That’s when it hit you.

You stagger to the kitchen you’re really shaken.
Your whole life seems so forsaken,
Like a broken glass with shattered razor edges in your heart.
You crumble to the floor like a thousand times before.
Pain so deep just like the night you found out

That’s when it hit you, I’m not there.
I can’t be coming home again.
I will never hold you close.
It hit you, like a hurricane-
Your howling soul, your crying rain
Now when you need me more than ever,
Here all alone, I’m gone forever,
We’re two casualties of that terrible war
That’s when it hit you.

Babe, you must go on.
You must keep moving on.
The pain won’t last forever, just a lifetime.
But, I have always been with you
Forever in your heart
Forever in your dreams

That’s when it hit you, I’m still here.
You’ll never be alone again.
You can always hold me close
My Love, my memory
Will always be
With you
